THIS CHART WILL SHOW THE TOP 200 SHOTS ACROSS THE NBA.
A COMPARISON FROM 2001-2002 TO NOW. (2019-2020)
JUST WOW!
I WONDER WHAT THE SHOT CHART WILL BE 10 YEARS FROM NOW.
WILL THEY ADD A 5P SHOT FROM 35 FT?
TODAYS NBA IS ALL ABOUT OPENING UP SPACE TO CREATE 1 ON 1’S MISMATCHES ALL THROUGHOUT THE GAME.
IF A MAN GETS BEAT ON DEFENSE USUALLY HELP DEFENSE ROTATES.
BUT IF THAT ROTATION IS LATE BY ANY MEANS THAT COULD RESULT INTO A LAY UP OR A WIDE OPEN 3.
THAT IS HOW THE NBA IS BEING PLAYED TODAY.
DO THE FANS ENJOY THIS STYLE?
I PERSONALLY THINK NBA PLAYERS SHOULD PLAY FASTER THAN THEY PLAY NOW.
THE SKILL LEVEL IN THE NBA IS DIFFERENT THAN HOW IT WAS 20 YEARS AGO.

It’s simple math! The mid range shot only matters in the playoffs. All the tough game winning shots usually come from that area.

The shots in the 2019-20 graph are just more efficient shots. A layup/dunk or floater from 0-5 feet is almost automatic. Players usually either make the shot or get a foul call. Why take a mid range shot when you can take a couple more steps back and get 3 points instead of 2 and spread the floor out more. Good article though.

I appreciate your comment. This was well thought and I do agree with your points. Mid range game is not the sexy shot anymore. All teams do is shot 40+ 3’s a game and they make less than 15 as a team. I would say the lack of defense and teams being less creative. Players who perfect the mid range see more success in the playoffs.

It is definitely due to the change of gameplay.

Wow, this comment has a whole new meaning now. So sad. Anyway, there are still players that rely heavily on the mid range. DeMar DeRozan being one of them. Khris Middleton, although has expanded his range in the past few years. Yes the mid range game IS dying out however and I’m not sure if it’s good for the league or not. Ratings have dropped. Is that slightly due to the way the game is being played today? Something to think about.

Nothing is mid range now. We will never see another Kobe is my take on this.

I understand what your saying. That would be a great way to analyze. It is true that during the 2000’s decade, those players have the slowest pace from any era. Shooting percentages many not be so high due to the intense pressure of defense. I miss those days 😢

An interesting addition to this would a made and missed shot chart. For example, I’d be interesting in seeing whether the shooting percentage for mid-range jumpers in 2001 was substantially better than it was for 3-pointers in 2019.
